Velvet Burger is a New Zealand burger chain founded in Dunedin by a group of students who had marched into a brewery a couple of years earlier with a ‘stab in the dark’ offer and came out, the proud new owners of the iconic Captain Cook pub. They’re an unusual bunch of very grounded, very Kiwi entrepreneurs.

With Velvet Burger, the boys set out with a vision of a place to get a great burger and a beer in the late hours — a place that would stand out from its competition by reflecting a youthful, irreverent Kiwi attitude and humour.

With a strong beer offering and substantial servings, Velvet has a very male but female-friendly orientation which is captured perfectly in the brand. As a result, Velvet Burger’s become an iconic destination for Dunedin’s under 25s and, with opening their Auckland store, they’re well on the way to national fame.
